Maria Mills

Pahokee, Fl

My name is Maria Hernandez Mills. I was born in Cuba and came to the US in 1962, at the age of 10, as a Pedro Pan child. I've lived in Pahokee, Florida, since 1963, and Iíve had a little training with local artist Donald Neal and Florida Watercolorist Bunny Cope, but I am mostly self-taught.

My favorite subject is the seashore; the ocean, its beaches and the treasures they hold. Much of my inspiration comes from the photographs I take while sailing with my husband around the islands of the Abacos in the Bahamas, the USVI, the west coast of Florida, (Sanibel and Captiva Islands) and the Florida Keys. My favorite paintings have a feeling of open space and miles of beach and ocean view, while at the same time leaving to the observer's imagination to wonder what's around the bend. A fellow islander, (she was from Jamaica) once told me she could feel the heat of the sun and she yearned to see her island home, while admiring one of my beach paintings. As an artist, it doesn't get any better than that.

My paintings don't have any deep profound messages or hidden meanings. They are about lazy summer days and soft ocean breezes. I like to put "a little piece of paradise in every painting." So kick off your shoes, sit back, and take in the view. It's always summer in my paintings and a walk on the beach only takes a little imagination. Enjoy!
